Fairtrade Fortnight in Eastleigh Borough

Millions of people in developing countries depend on farming. But they are trapped in poverty by the rules of world trade, keeping those at the start of supply chains powerless to earn enough to cover their costs and with nothing to save for their families.

Choosing Fairtrade offers farmers and workers a better chance to work their way out of poverty, through fairer wages, safer conditions at work and a little extra, called the Fairtrade premium, to invest in projects to improve life for their whole communities.

Your step for Fairtrade can be as simple as trying a new Fairtrade product, or as big and bold as launching  a campaign to get your whole town to go Fairtrade. Every single one counts, because together they lead to life-changing projects in developing countries.

How about….

  • Inviting a friend out for a Fairtrade coffee
  • Organising a Fairtrade chocolate tasting at school
  • Telling your friends on Facebook about your favourite Fairtrade product
  • Buying Fairtrade tea bags when it’s your turn at work
  • Joining your local campaign group
  • Asking your local shop to stock more Fairtrade choices

Visit the Fairtrade Spring Shopping event at St Martin’s in the Wood church on Friday 2nd March from 6.30pm – 9.30pm or visit the fairtrade stall at Eastleigh Market on the 3rd and 10th March.

Every step counts towards a total of 1.5 million steps hoping to be achieved by the end of 2012 – one step for every farmer and worker in the Fairtrade system. Visit the Fairtrade Fortnight website and take a step in 2012!

Transition Open Evening

Transition Chandlers Ford held a successful Transition Open Evening on Thursday 16th February in Chandlers Ford. The evening consisted of a short film introducing the issues of peak oil and climate change, followed by a presentation, given by Greg Hewitt – founder of Transition Chandlers Ford.

The presentation covered the current Eastleigh Transition Network projects, along with a list of projects that had proven to be successful in other Transition initiatives in the UK. The aim was to inspire people about the potential of communities coming together to tackle the challenges we face. Ideas included community tree planting, The Great Reskilling, and an energy monitor loan scheme. If you’d like to see the presentation, please leave a comment or send an email to Transition Chandlers Ford.

Bid to become a Portas Pilot

Struggling towns and cities across England are being handed the chance to breathe new life into their ailing high streets.

Mary Portas and the Local Government Minister launched a competition to choose 12 towns to become ‘Portas Pilots’, with the winners benefiting from a share of £1 million to help turn around their “unloved and unused” high streets.

Eastleigh Transition Network is all about creating buzzing, local towns where communities can come together, share knowledge and develop skills. If you would like to develop this for a town within Eastleigh Borough to apply to become a Portas Pilot, please let us know.
