Twenty-eight percent of Britain’s annual carbon dioxide emissions are produced by our cars, lorries, trains, boats and planes (DECC [2010] ‘Estimated emissions of carbon dioxide [CO2]‘ by National Communication source category, type of fuel and end-user category, 1970-2008). Road transport takes the biggest slice (89%) of the transport cake.

Consequently, changing both the transport we use and the ways in which we use it are top priorities in planning for a low carbon future. Car use remains essential to the life of many communities, especially rurally where homes, workplaces and services are scattered and public transport may be limited.

Due to the importance given to highways planning for cars, pedestrian and cycle routes within many communities are often incomplete or compromised by having to share space with road traffic. There is great scope to reverse these priorities and maximise the opportunities for walking and cycling.

Transport Ideas

  • Helping to maintain and improve local networks of footpaths and bridleways. Removing obstacles such as stiles is an excellent ways to promote a broad-based walking and cycling culture locally.
  • Car clubs and car-sharing are effective in reducing car use and related emissions.
  • Use an electric car: they will produce 50% fewer carbon emissions per mile than an ordinary fuel-efficient car (King, J. [2008] ‘The King Review of low-carbon cars Part II: recommendations for action’, March 2008, HMSO, London).
  • Reduce the need for transport: keep the places people live, work, shop and play close together
  • Encourage school and workplace travel plans
  • Campaign for improved safety in residential areas by reducing speed limits to 20mph
  • Campaign for frequent, reliable bus services
